Steven Gerrard's Foundation, in association with Kinder + Sport and the Hugh McAuley Football Academy, gave around 100 local children the opportunity to experience top-class football training this week.

The children, aged between eight and 12, were selected by teachers, youth leaders and social workers from a range of local schools and groups to take part in the four day camp.

Using a broad range of activities designed to help young people to learn and develop new skills and techniques in a fun, inclusive and rewarding atmosphere, children participate in a series of challenging and enjoyable skill sessions, small-sided games and tournaments.

A spokesperson from Ferrero said about the initiative: "At Ferrero, we believe that active children are more likely to grow into active adults, so we are passionate about encouraging future generations to embrace physical exercise and encourage them to lead a balanced, active lifestyle. Working with football clubs throughout the UK, our Kinder + Sport programme has helped to get over 41,000 children moving. We are proud to have the opportunity to build on this success by partnering with The Steven Gerrard Foundation and work together to help inspire children to celebrate the joy of moving."

Taking place at the Lord Derby Academy in Huyton, the camp came to a fitting close with a ceremony on Thursday when Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakho presented certificates and medals to all participants in recognition of their achievements.

Steven added: "Giving kids the opportunity to experience the benefits of sport is so important in helping them grow into healthy and active adults. Kinder + Sport is a fantastic initiative that gets children across the whole of the UK and Ireland moving and I'm really pleased to have them on board supporting the SGF Football Camps."

Hugh McAuley, who coached Steven during his early years at Liverpool FC, said: "This is the fourth consecutive year we have run a camp for the Foundation. It's great to see how the annual programme has evolved since it began in 2012 and particularly this year to be working with the Kinder + Sport Programme, offering engaging opportunities to enhance these young peoples' active lifestyles."

Ferrero is partnering with the Football League Trust to launch a national schools initiative to get children active and promote healthy lifestyles, as part of the global Kinder+Sport programme.

Ferrero and the Football League Trust are today announcing a partnership to deliver a national programme for schools to encourage children to take part in physical activity, build awareness of the importance of a healthy diet and adopt an active lifestyle. The initiative sets out to get over 21,000 children moving and deliver over 190,000 hours of activity and education over the 2014/15 school year across the UK and Ireland.

Alongside this, Ferrero is also partnering with the Football League as the official sponsor of the Kinder+Sport Kids Cup and Kinder+Sport Girls Cup, a national tournament for junior footballers across the country which will get over 20,000 children moving and active. The two competitions, the Kinder+Sport Kids Cup and the Kinder+Sport Girls Cup, culminate in an exciting final at Wembley Stadium over the Championship Play-off weekend in front of thousands of fans. The competition inspires children to be active, healthy, and develop a strong sense of teamwork, making it a perfect fit for the Kinder+Sport programme.

The ‘+ Sport Move and Learn Project' is part of Ferrero's global Kinder+Sport initiative designed to encourage healthy and active lifestyles in children across the world. Targeted at primary school children aged between 9- 10 years, the programme combines six weeks of practical sporting sessions with classroom based sessions focused on diet, nutrition and the human body.

It will be delivered in schools across the country in partnership with the Community Trusts of several top football clubs across England, Scotland and The Republic of Ireland. These include Watford FC; Blackburn Rovers; Coventry City; Charlton Athletic; Derby County; Middlesbrough FC; Sheffield United; and Plymouth Argyle. In Scotland, Ferrero are partnering with the Scottish Professional Football League Trust to deliver the programme with Rangers FC; Celtic FC. Meanwhile, the Football Association Ireland will be launching a pilot programme in the Cork area where Ferrero is a large employer - producing 40% of the world's supply of Tic-tacs out of their Cork factory.

The roll-out of the programme follows the enormous success of its pilot in 2013/2014 which was developed in partnership with Watford Football Club's Community Sports and Education Trust. The pilot, which combined a schools based initiative with an out of school holiday camp programme, reached 6,293 children, and received outstanding feedback from teachers and parents.

A spokesperson from Ferrero said: "At Ferrero, we believe that active children are more likely to grow into active adults, and so we are passionate about inspiring future generations to embrace physical exercise, and gain a sense of joy from living an active and healthy life. 12 million children across the world have participated in the Kinder+Sport programme, and we're thrilled to be partnering with the Football League Trust to bring the benefits of the programme to the UK.

Football clubs are at the heart of their communities and have a remarkable ability to reach and engage with people. Therefore, working with football clubs across the countries, we know we can make a real difference in ensuring children understand the importance of adopting a healthy and balanced diet alongside regular physical activity."

A record number of girls have taken part in a major schools football tournament which culminates in a once in a lifetime opportunity to play at Wembley before the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

Over 6,000 girls, aged under 13, have taken part in the group stages of the Kinder+Sport Football League Girls Cup - an increase of more than 1,000 from last year.

Mike Evans, Director of Operations at The Football League Trust, comments, "There is a real buzz about Women's and Girl's football at the moment.  Over the past year the Football League clubs have worked hard on our Female Football Development programme which has successfully stoked interest in the game and strengthened connections between schools and clubs. This is very much reflected in the dramatic increase in participation in the Kinder+Sport Girls Cup."

The competition, which is organised on behalf of The Football League by The Football League Trust, has a unique format.  Each of the 72 Football League clubs run a competition for their local schools, with the winners representing their club, through various stages, on the road to Wembley. The 72 winners of the group stages will now compete at 8 Area Finals, which takes place around the country between 12-17 January.

Mike Evans, continues "The girls who won their local competition now have Wembley and a once in a lifetime experience within their grasp. However, perhaps the most important outcome is that the competition is encouraging so many girls to be active at an early age."

A Ferrero spokesperson said, "We are delighted to be supporting the Football League Kids and Girls Cup competitions, to get children across the country involved with and excited about playing sport and getting active as part of our wider Kinder+Sport activity. At Ferrero we believe that active children are more likely to grow into active adults, and so we are passionate about inspiring future generations to embrace physical exercise, and gain a sense of joy from living an active and healthy life which we to achieve through the Kinder+Sport programme..

Led by clubs in their regions, the tournaments provide children with a truly unique opportunity to be exposed to the world of professional sport, and we hope that they are inspired to remain active following this."

Drew Barrand, Marketing Director of The Football League said, "These competitions really show how Football League clubs connect and engage with their local communities. The Kinder+Sport Football League Kids and Girls Cups use that connection, along with the chance to play on a national stage at Wembley, to drive participation as part of The Football League's ongoing commitment to grassroots football."

Ferrero are also sponsoring the Kinder+Sport Football League Kids Cup Competition which is a six-a-side competition for children under 11, and sees the 72 clubs split into 3 divisions, in line with club's divisional status, before being again split into two groups, north and south. The winners of the divisional northern and southern finals then qualify for the chance to play at Wembley before the Sky Bet Football League Play-Off Final of the relevant division.
